Top 10 Things That Scare Me About Riding My Bike 4,000 Miles Across the US
Wildfire smoke - I was hoping for a wet winter and a slow wildfire season. Don’t think I’m getting that wish
Climbing in general but especially day 3 which includes 25 miles straight. The Cascades and the Rockies… I’m dreaming of how strong I will be once I get to North Dakota.
Injury from crashing or overuse of these old bodies. We have been pretty consistent with our training the last few months and will take rest days to mitigate overuse injuries. The crashing type of injury though… let’s just hope it doesn’t happen!
Illness - I’ve only had one serious illness on a long tour and it wasn’t fun. We are pretty healthy so hopefully nothing unexpected happens.
Headwinds - when we ride, not on tour, it is usually an out and back or a loop so we always try to start into the wind so we can finish with a tailwind. This isn’t an option when crossing the US. Good thing I’ve got Professor Honey-buns to draft behind.
Too much time together - the longest we have spent bike touring is 6 weeks and yes… we did start to get annoyed with each other. It’s only natural and we have actually discussed ways to deal with this (besides just being annoyed 😀) Wish us luck
Bike problems we can’t fix - especially if we aren’t near a bike shop. But this has turned into a great experience in the past. Let’s just hope history repeats itself if we do have problems.Â
Heat & Humidity - which is my definition of hell. We’ll ride super early to beat the heat when necessary, then search out shade or air conditioning for the rest of the day. Ohio might catch me napping at a cafe or two.
Finding places to camp - we want to camp as much as possible to save $$ and in some areas there are no campgrounds. I loved wild camping in Scotland and Norway, but the US is a different story.Â
Discouragement - keeping ourselves in a positive mental space is key for the long days and tough times. I know discouragement will come, luckily we have each other to help keep our spirits up. I’m also excited for this online community and your words of encouragement!
