Our New Hutterite BFF
Yesterday we were on farm roads in Eastern Washington with NOTHING for miles. We came to a corner where there was a large farming operation with quite a few attached houses and other buildings. A man had stopped his truck in the middle of the road and was waiting for us. He asked what we were doing and if we wanted a few cherries - his truck was full of them. But then he said "follow me - I want to give you something". So of course we did. Edward Stahl is the head of the Hutt

Day 1 & 2 stats and Week 1 Bingo
Day 1 stats. Bellingham to Lakewood, WA. 60 miles with 3,415 feet elevation gain. Headwind most of the day but quite a bit of paved path so that kinda made up for it. Day 2 stats - 66.7 miles. 1116 feet of climbing.. but I that that was incorrect since map my ride said it should be more and it felt like more. But we will go with what my wahoo says Over 35 miles of gravel path - wonderful since we weren't on a road and the scenery was amazing. Tough because 100% of our trai

FroggToggs
Not a paid advertisment. I just want to share something cool with ya'll. Some training rides are about miles. Others are about survival. And yes, I can be dramatic. Heat can become the real opponent Preparing for a cross-country ride means getting ready for more than just long days on the bike. It also means thinking ahead about what happens when the route runs straight into serious summer weather. Cooling Cloth The idea is simple with Frogg Toggs. You wet the cloth, and i

Sometimes It's Better To Go The Long Way
by: Robert Sawyer There have been several instances where we have ridden past a road closed sign and been able to get through without any problems, we saved time and distance by not taking the detour. However, there have also been times when that tactic has backfired on us. The first one, I can’t remember exactly where, but somewhere in the states. We came to a sign that said “road closed 5 miles ahead”. The detour would have added an extra 1.5 miles to our day’s ride. We we

The Kindness of Strangers- Misadventures of a Broken Derailleur
On our 2023 LEJOG (UK) tour, we were riding a nice little trail through Winsford Town Park when Bliss called for me to stop. I went back to find that she had run over a stick that popped up and stuck between her rear derailleur. It snapped the derailleur in 3 pieces. Bad news! Crazy what a small stick can do! Amazingly, apple maps showed a bike shop right around the corner. Bliss pushed my bike and I carried hers. Not a bike shop, but a Polish market. More bad news. We wer

She was very fit, but hadn’t done an extended trip like this before. They only stayed with us for one night, but we spent a

Will It Be Enough? 120 Days to 4,000 Miles
I have 120 days to get in the best physical shape of my life so cycling 4,000 miles and climbing 142,000 feet is doable. It won't be easy. I expect pain and maybe even a few tears. I just want to make sure I can (at my advanced age ) finish. Here's some of what I'm doing to get ready..... Physical Therapy for my knees. Bone on bone arthritis won't stop me! Hot Yoga - I always struggle in heat so I am hoping a little heat conditioning will help. Strength training. Cuz I'm k

Convincing My Knee We’re Biking Across the U.S.
130 Days Until Launch Yesterday, I officially added physical therapy to my cross-country training plan. The goal? Get my knee as strong as possible before we roll out on June 20. I’ve had one knee surgery. I have arthritis. It’s the fun bone-on-bone kind. And one of my biggest worries is whether this knee will hold up to riding all day, every day, across the country. For context, the farthest I’ve ever ridden on a trip is 1,100 miles. Which is impressive… until you remember t
